I thought he was choosing the harder, more honest life.

The book seemed to reward leaving. I kept reading departure as proof that the ideals mattered.

Or he keeps leaving before anyone can ask him to stay.

To me, the pattern was less heroic. Commitment can be the frightening choice when motion feels like freedom.
